explorer needs to close help pls

Hi
I did a fresh install of xp pro sp2 about 3 months ago and ive never done update patchs, until under the influence of drink i did it a month ago and since then i'm having probs with explorer.exe needs to close and then it restarts. Its seems to be when I try to access either of my hard drives through the desktop the egg timer symbol flashes 5 times the shorcuts reload quickly and then i get the explorer needs to close box. In the events its listed as fault 1000 and i cant find anything on MS website that applies to me. Ive done countless spyware/malware/virus scans all clean. Do any of you out there no of any known issues with windows update that i can delete, windows downloaded 39 updates for me to play with and now i'm at a loss for what to do next other than a fresh install. the fault is explorer.exe ver 6.0.2900.3156 fault address 0x000118b8.
Any ideas would be great
Thanks
