Hi, I'm starting a new business as an energy performance assessor.  I'm looking for recommendations for a portable card payment reader,reliable, low  charges and easy to use.

    Card readers tend to work in one of two ways cost wise:

    You either pay more per transaction for cheaper rent of the unit, or you pay less per transaction but pay more on the rental so it sort of works out the same.

    Average going rental rate for fixed units is about £30 a month + VAT for a machine regardless of who you go with.  There may be providers that will sell you a portable reader and then charge a percentage of the transaction, which could be anywhere up to 5% depending on the provider (and sometimes the card type), and may have other hoops as using an app, etc.

    However you can push costs through your business so may not be that much of an issue.
