Personally I'd be quietly glad if my mum did it for me. I hate owing people money.0

If you choose to be a student then that is the way you have to accept life is for a few years while you get through your studies, it's not forever. What does your son do? If he is working full time I think what you done is fine BUT if he is a student I think that it is pretty harsh. Its really depressing when your a student and your skint all the time it feels like your missing out!MFiT-T2 challenge member #59
Aiming to pay of £30k from my mortgage between Dec '09 and Dec '120 -
dont feel bad i used to help my kids a lot until i became ill and couldnt they have learnt the most valuble lesson and that is to help themselves i used to think being a parent was giving them nice things now i realise its about teaching them to fend for themselves and during the time i have been unwell they have shown me how responsible this has made them
sometimes the difficulties we go through in life teach us the most important lessonsThe average woman would rather have beauty than brains,
because the average man can see better than he can think.
Many people's view of the world is down to their experience, perception and what they have been conditioned to,this isnt any old MSE reply this is a important and experienced MSE reply :rotfl:0 -
I think you did the right thing, so you shouldn't feel guilty. I was far too soft with my son, always lending him money everytime he got into difficulties, only for him to spend money on unnecessary luxuries instead of trying to pay off his debts.
He'll appreciate it in the long run.

Definitely did the right thing as my mum has done that with me in the past and my mum is always right or so she would like to believe.
"I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"
For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!0 -
nope he has a full time job and earns far more money than I doWhat does your son do? If he is working full time I think what you done is fine BUT if he is a student I think that it is pretty harsh. Its really depressing when your a student and your skint all the time it feels like your missing out!
On his 20th birthday I explained that from now on all money borrowed would have to be paid back as I just couldnt afford to keep giving him handouts. So eventhough I have warned him about it, I still have felt pretty mean
Thankyou to everyone who has replied, I feel stronger
knowing that what I did was the best thing for him too.
I nearly crumbled when his brother came back from the sales with clothes and shoes though

My sister owed my mum a few quid for a photo album which she didn't get for a few weeks so my mum wrapped it up as a x-mas present instead! she realised she wouldn't be getting the money back!
You done the perfect thing to do.
Point out to your son that the january sales are generally full of x-mas presents the shops haven't sold or the clothes from 2seassons ago which are now rank!
well done hunny xxx0 -
I owe my mum £120 and when she asked me what I wanted for Christmas I told her I didn't want anything and would she knock a nominal amount off the total that I owe her instead.
She still gave me a £10 store voucher as a token gift which was gratefully received, but hasn't made any mention of the amount I still owe her. So, I shall pay her back the full amount when I have it and if she gives me some of it back then so be it. If not, it's no big deal. I borrowed it - so I owe it.
If you were my mum I'd be relieved that you were kind enough to do that so don't beat yourself up about it. You did the right thing!0 -
I owe my boyfriend £60 and have just bought him some things off ebay so i've reduced my debt to him which i feel much better about because i hate owing him money.0
