Add on policies for young drivers
Marmalade offer an add on policy for young drivers, allowing them to be insured on a parent's car, as long as the car is separately insured. The young driver is then earning NCD and their accidents do not go onto the parent's policy.
Is this unique to Marmalade or does anyone else offer a similar policy?

Collingwood does the same and did identify a few others when I was looking last year0

There is an Admiral sister company (Veygo), but think it is just for learners. Its not that common as most insurers do no allow this on top insurance over their main policy. As soon as the new driver steps out of the vehicle, the risk passes back to the main policy. There could be additional risk that the main insurer is not aware of and because of this they don't allow the on top policies. You need to explicitly ask your main insurer if the will accept this.0

I can't see an add on policy on the Collingwood web site. As far as I can tell, their new driver policy is a standard policy, not an add on.GrumpyDil said:Collingwood does the same and did identify a few others when I was looking last year
If you read through or apply it is a bolt on and asks for confirmation that the owner has their own policy in place.

That's learner driver insurance, not young driver insurance. I might not have been absolutely clear, but the Marmalade Young Driver policy is an add on policy that covers qualified drivers driving a car they don't own. I can't find any other similar policies, although a few people resell the Marmalade policy.GrumpyDil said:https://www.collingwood.co.uk/learner-driver-insurance/

This seems to be a very new thing - it wasn't offered either by them or Adrian Flux who we had daughters Learner add-on policy with back in October '23.
I've not done a quote on this but the list of requirements is fairly significant
Would be interesting to see how it compares with other policy costs0 -
To add this driver to my policy, as a learner, increases my premium by over £1000. Once qualified, I'm going to guess it would be more than double that, but I couldn't get a ballpark figure out of the lady in the call centre.Wonka_2 said:Would be interesting to see how it compares with other policy costs
If I use Marmalade it would be about £1800 with no risk to my insurance history and the possibility of earning NCD. The main downside is that I would have to fit a telematics box in my car and need to manage which journeys are recorded for which driver.

We paid about £60 per month as a learner (£720pa) with an add-on policy and post test this would have added over £2.5k pa to the policy (and needed a black box which would have been active for all drivers on that vehicle)mgfvvc said:

We cancelled and switched to an Aviva multicar policy which added 'only' £1.2k but with no black box.
As daughter will be heading to university as some point soon, without a car, then we took the view that acquiring NCD can wait0 -
Veygo just seem to do temporary policies, with a monthly subscription option. There is some marketing fluff about "student policies", but it seems to just be their standard temporary insurance when you look into it.jimjames said:
They also do it for those who have passed their test for cover on parent's car400ixl said:There is an Admiral sister company (Veygo), but think it is just for learners. I
