    Racing spoon?
I may be wrong but I think it's a spoon with a biggish flattish bowl designed so soldiers can get food down in the fastest possible time (hence the racing). You can buy fancy ones but I have heard of someone who just used a wooden spoon with most of the handle cut off!

It's basically just a shovel for the gob! :D

Yup,an all-in-one eating iron, usually a wooden spoon with a length of paracord threaded thru a hole in the handle,so you can hang it around your neck, saves hunting thru your webbing, bergen ect for it.

I have been thinking of getting together an emergency kit and it seems several of us on here are on the same wavelength. I have cleared a bare brick cupboard off my office and am starting to assemble the necessities. Luckily as Dh is a fisherman and an ex camper we have a lot of whats on the list. I am reading up on preserving food and also buy an extra can or 2 every week. I bought a wind up radio and lamp some time ago and they are already in the box. I think we got off quite lightly here during the big freeze but it taught me a lesson as we were basically housebound as I could not push DH's wheelchair in the snow, so thats one of the main reasons for me being prepared.

Living out in the sticks as a child, miles from food stores, we had power cuts every winter.

My mother always aimed to have 6 weeks supplies in the house, although the length of time was informed by her experience of the winter of 1947.

Vaseline on cotton wool balls makes a great firelighter, as do tampons apparently

Can't see my husband trying to light the barbie with a greased lillet, I think he would give up and order a take away instead.
