Eon Next EV tariff over charging issue

I’ll try and keep this brief,  but I  need some guidance on what to do next

On 14/7/23 I moved over to EON NEXT EV tariff and this is when the problems started

From 14/7/23 to 3/10/23 I have been billed for 3602.7 KwH of electricity.

However the meter readings from 14/7/23 to 6/10/23 confirm I have only used 1804 KwH of electricity

The meter readings, my EV charger app and home energy display unit all agree the same usage

The problem seems to be the “half hourly data feeds” that claim my 7kwh POD point charger is drawing 7kwh per 30 mins as EON Next EV doesn’t use meter readings it uses consumption figures.

I first raised this complaint in August 2023, escalated to the ombudsman in November due to lack of progress, Ombudsman ruled EON Next to provide me with meter readings to back up the bills, the readings they gave me back up my claims not the bills

EON Next state I must go back to the Ombudsman and the Ombudsman state I must raise a new compliant with EON Next which they won’t accept until Ombudsman tells them to

Every time I phone EON Next they promise to ring me back and never do, likewise when I email them, they state they won’t investigate until the Ombudsman gets in touch

Any suggestions what I do next is greatly appreciated as all I can think of is move providers but I don’t know how I get a refund for the over billing

    Welcome to the forum.
I think we had someone else with the same problem last year. I don't recall how their situation was resolved, but if you search the forum you should find out he thread.

  • I'm with Eon Next on their EV tariff.  By my reckoning they under-charged me slightly for the first month then got it exactly right.  But you don't need Eon Next to provide you with half-hourly meter readings, just register with n3rgy.com and download your own data.

Thanks, I have access to the data using an app called Bright as well as one called Hugo that EON Next suggest, this is the problem, if I take a meter reading at midnight and another at 7am the next morning, the meter and my POD point both agree that I have put 27kwh into my car but the app should consumption shows 54kwh used

EON Next won’t acknowledge or investigate  this

I've looked at my Eon Next statements and although they show the total energy consumed they don't show any meter readings.  I wonder if that is "legal" or follows whatever protocol is set?

If I look online at my account I can see the smart meter readings on which each statement is based but that is my only way of determining what Eon Next thinks my meter reading are.  Three months on this tariff and so far the Eon Next meter readings tally with my own.

I also check that the division between cheap and regular usage tallies with the half hourly dated I download.  The last two statements have been correct, the first one worked out slightly in my favour.

    Here's the other thread:
There are two affected customers in that thread (the original poster @petelancaster1988 and the final reply from @tma32 ), both with Octopus, and the problem was blamed on their smart meter firmware.
Do you have the same model of smart meter, an early L&G E470? Post a photo of your meter if you aren't sure.

    That’s brilliant many thanks

by coincidence I also have a Landis & Gyr E470 meter - wonder if it’s the same problem

Lets see what EON Next say

Most likely more than just a coincidence; some anomaly with that particular meter.  Hence both the app you tried and Eon Next see a reading that is double the actual amount of energy consumed.

  • The thread cited by @QrizB gives a plausible explanation of how the problem occurs:

I found this on another forum from 2 years ago.

‘ Ok, just had a call from BEIS on this (very clever chap called Peter). It seems that SMETS1 meters record half hourly data as kW per half hour (not per hour) and therefore pre-DCC migration the SMETS1 SMSO was re-calculating this. It sounds like post DCC migration this recalculation step was lost and hence the issue you’re seeing.’

  • Just an update. Having raised this issue with EON Next they claim my meter is giving the correct readings despite my providing photos of the meter readings at 11pm and 7am showing how much night time electricity I have used and this matches my POD point report - the data that EON Next have provided me with shows my usage is 14kw per hour when the car is the main thing charging

Anyone got any ideas where I can go next as EON Next are refusing to accept my complaint about the meter not being accurate
