Octopus 'Beta' tariff
I'm not long renewed my contract with Octopus for my electric. I was previously on the Octopus Go tariff and just updated the costs per unit.
About 2 years ago, I noticed on more than one period I wasnt being billed for electicity and raised this with them, i was met with "The smart meter sends through half hourly reports and if there is one break in reporting it means the bill isnt generated, as this is a Beta tariff, mistakes happen from time to time.
Well this was resolved and i was billed, leaving me in arrears but i caught up. I explained that they need to have due diligence to ensure this doesnt happen in future!!!.
Anyway, onto the issue, I have not been billed for electricty since january last year but have continued to pay my DD, my smart meter is still sending through information as i can see it on the dashboard/portal. I am currently £2000 in credit with them, and after pulling my data, i have worked out i owe approx £1700.
Where do i stand? Is it my responsability to inform them (Again!!) that i havent been billed? if i dont report it, and when they do finally realise, can they only bill me under back billing regulations?

They have your credit - they can use that to settle any usage you have made. Someone sneaky might think they can ask for some credit back and then argue about usage more than 12 months ago.0

Yes, I recall the refunds page on the Octopus site says they'll need to issue a bill to get an update to date view before a refund can be requested.mortgageFTB said:
I doubt they’ll return the money to bank, without generating a bill.MeteredOut said:They have your credit - they can use that to settle any usage you have made. Someone sneaky might think they can ask for some credit back and then argue about usage more than 12 months ago.
When I request to return money to my account, if my bill was generated more than X weeks ago, it doesn’t allow it.
I’d imagine the same applies here.
OP, when did you last inform Octopus? You have to show you've made an effort to let them know there's an issue, and you are legally responsible to pay for all power used.0 -
Further to the previous posts, you'll find that thw Octopus Go T&C aow them to bill you at the Flexible Octopus rates if your smart meter data is missing. It's therefore in your own best interests to prompt Octopus to generate a bill, since smart meters only retain data for 12 months and if they can't get the data, all those cheap kWhs could end up being charged at 27p instead!N. Last correspondance was 12 months ago when the last bill was generated, since then i have manually provided readings and they have sent people out to take reading. i can also see the readings on the portal to say they have been sent through.QrizB said:Further to the previous posts, you'll find that thw Octopus Go T&C aow them to bill you at the Flexible Octopus rates if your smart meter data is missing. It's therefore in your own best interests to prompt Octopus to generate a bill, since smart meters only retain data for 12 months and if they can't get the data, all those cheap kWhs could end up being charged at 27p instead!0 -
I dont plan on asking for a refund, the plan was to wait until they pick up on it and them take direct from the credit, with the workings I don't believe I will be in debtMeteredOut said:They have your credit - they can use that to settle any usage you have made. It's obviously an error on their part but why not just tell them? It doesn't take any more effort to fire off an email to Octopus than to post on this forum so you could have done that 3 times this afternoon. Do you want the problem sorted or do you want to profit from their error - which in effect means at the expense of other customers?

The OP said "previously on Octopus Go". It's not clear what tariff they are on now.QrizB said:Baloo25 said:

"not long renewed my contract with Octopus" might indicate they've changed that.
But, you're right, if the OP is still on Go, and has been counting on getting overnight 9p/kWh for 4 hours each night, they might be in for a surprise when the bill arrives...0 -
