What happens if your tax return is not processed?

I sent my 2022/23  paper tax return to HMRC before the October deadline.

According to the "Check when you can expect a reply from HMRC" service I should have received by tax calculation by now.

However, when I ask HMRC via webchat they keep saying they have my return but it has not yet been processed so have no idea how much is due (and/if there are payments on account)

Given 2022/23 tax payments are due by the 31st and I have been told "If you owe anything you need to pay it by the due date" I would be grateful for any advice and in particular where I would stand if I pay the wrong amount given I don't know what is due..
