Card order in Google pay

I'm just starting to use Google Pay and getting my head around how it works. With the card order, if I had my AMEX card as the default card and I paid in a shop that doesn't accept AMEX, would Google Pay automatically use the second choice card or would I need to manually select it?

You need to select which card to use if one is declined for whatever reason

I don't know for sure but would imagine that it'll try to use the default card and if the payment terminal declines it, it would then be up to you to select another card manually.  Presumably easy to experiment to find out?

The terminal will decline the payment, you would then need to try again with a different card (via Google Pay, or physically presented).
  • Thank you. I thought so, but thought it was worth checking. And is it right that you don't need to have the app open to pay, your phone just needs to be unlocked?

I have a pixel 6 pro but I suspect it'll be the same for anyone else with stock Android or minimal change

Unlock (you should have this by default), then swipe down and pick wallet and your cards are there - the first one is your default and you can just swipe to the next card. I have never tried to pay any other way and I doubt it would cycle through multiple cards to get one that hit in case they charged the wrong one

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

I don't open the Wallet (/Google Pay) app specifically unless I want to change the payment card.  If happy to pay with the default card, just unlock phone and tap (assuming NFC is on of course)
