can i ask a credit card company to correct an action re. a debt which was cleared but which is affecting a credit score

You can ask them to ensure data is correct but your credit score is irrelevant.0

Any factual part of your credit history, such as having a debt and paying it off, will not be removed by the lender, it will go after 6 years
