I didn't pay any tax on freelance earnings from April 2022 to April 2023 - help!

in Cutting tax
Between April 2022 and April 2023 to supplement my income I started doing freelance writing. I didn't think I would exceed the £1000. I had a mild panic about tax-related stuff today, and I checked, and I earned £1700 between April 2022 and April 2023. I have just registered for self-assessment - is there anything more I can do - any numbers I can call, any email addresses I can email? I'm very stressed about fines and whatnot. I will pay whatever's necessary!

What fines do you think might be applicable?
How much tax do you think you will owe for that tax year?0 -
Hi there, I've no idea about the fines - my taxable income (minus the freelance work) was around 20k and I paid around 1.5k, that's just for my jobDazed_and_C0nfused said:jurassicpartridge said:Between April 2022 and April 2023 to supplement my income I started doing freelance writing. No need to panic. Worst case scenario is that you will be charged a little interest on any unpaid tax between 31 January and when you pay it. As the tax is likely to be around £140 it won't be much interest. You can mitigate this by paying what you think you will be due as soon as you get your UTR.
Once the Tax Return is issued you will get 3 months to complete it before any fines but any tax still remains payable on 31 January.0 -
April 2022 to April 2023 is the most recent tax year. You have until Jan 31st (another week) to submit a self assessment. Your tax return is not late and you will have no fines to pay if you submit it on time.0

The filing date is not 31 January if you have just registered (as the OP has). The due date for payment remains 31 Jan but the filing date for the return is 3 months.Strummer22 said:April 2022 to April 2023 is the most recent tax year.
