Clearly they could argue that I should have just taxed it on or before 01/12 or declared it SORN but it just all seemed like a bit of faff for a month.
    Thanks!
In hindsight SORN is incredibly easy, you just log on to the DVLA website, enter your details and it's done, zero cost and you can retax online again after 5 days. Would have saved £40 too
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

There's never, ever been a "grace period" of six weeks with a month's tax being skipped. You might have been able to get away with a week or two back in the day when the only record was the colourful paper in the windscreen, but it's ten years since that was replaced by the computer record.
There wasn't a grace period back in the day of tax disks either from a payment point of view. There was a period of not being done for displaying the disk due to it being posted, but never for the actual payment side.

I assume that you know this, but in case you weren't aware, and for the benefit of anyone else following the thread, the MOT only has to be valid on the first day of the month that the tax starts (or the day you are taxing it if mid-month), so you could have taxed it in November or before Dec 5th....

(And you don't need valid insurance to tax it, in fact DVLA clap their hands with glee if you haven't got insurance and you tax it because you are committing a SORN offence and they can automatically fine you.....)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
