Gas Supply Issue
Hi guys, thanks in advance if anyone has any advice for an awkward situation I've ended up in...
Basically I'd been using EDF for my gas and electric supply since around 2017, no issues, then about a year ago I had "Sorry you're leaving us" messages coming through the account in relation to my gas supply. I contacted them and said "I'm not? I've never requested to leave or spoken to any other companies?! I don't want to leave!". They said they can't do anything, I have to cancel it with the new supplier, but I did not know who this mystery new supplier was.
After much back and forth EDF told me the new supplier was Octopus, Octopus insisted they weren't my supplier and that EDF were, EDF said the opposite... So from around February last year I've had no official supplier - I tried various chats with EDF to fix it which inevitably involved going through WhatsApp support and when that got difficult they said they'd look into it then no reply again.
So for all those months I've had gas supply but no bill, obviously I need to sort this out because as much as it's nice not paying I presume I'm going to get a massive bill when it's sorted. Having looked into it it's supposed to be illegal not to have a supplier but it wasn't for want of trying! I've done a search and the gas "Findmysupplier" says no details available.
Anyone been in a similar situation or have any ideas what I need to do? I guess I could try a new supplier but I'm sure they'll want to know the current one for handover??
Cheers for any help!

Are you tracking your actual usage and setting aside a rough amount for what your bills will be? If not, I'd recommend doing that.
As you suggest, why not sign up for EDF online, and see what it does? Or, get a friend who is with Octopus to refer you (for £50 each) and sign up there, and see what happens.
I suspect doing a switch might be the only way to actually get someone to seriously look into things. The normal route would be to issue a complaint, but i guess both companies will not accept a complain from a "non-customer". You could also raise a compaint with the Ombudsman and see if that gets things moving.1 -

Cheers for any help!If the search doesn't identify a supplier for your property, your next point of contact should be your gas distribution network operator. They will be able to help you find your supplier, or tell you how to join a new supplier if (somehow) your connection has been deleted from the database.
