Help on Where to Go?

As the energy club still isn't available, can anyone help?

I'm currently on a near-ending fix with E.On Next (Next 2 Year v18), of which rates are:

7.28 p/kWh (40.92p standing charge) for gas
27.63 p/kWh (58.45p standing charge) for electric

E.on Next are saying I should have Next Fixed 12m v6:
6.92 p/kWh (29.60p standing charge) for gas
26.44 p/kWh (50.69p standing charge) for electric

which is cheaper than I am paying now - not sure why they haven't told me about this, I thought companies had to tell you if there was a cheaper deal?

I was looking at the Octopus deal with changing rates as a friend said his electric unit rate went right down.  Is this deal protected by the energy price cap?

Any other advice?

Octopus Tracker isn't protected by the price cap, in theory you could pay up to 100p for electric and 30p for gas, but the reality is there's only been a tiny number of days in the past year that have been close to the Government capped rates. Take a look at gastracker.uk and the December 2023 rates which is what you'd be on now.

Love Octopus Tracker. I'd fixed the gas and paid £75 to exit the fix as I could see how much I'd save on it.

If you are a worrier, Tracker might not suit you, but I'm certainly happy with my choice.

Cheap power is there because it is at a time when no-one wants it so unless you can rearrange your electrical usage around that then not much benefit. Not huge differences in cost otherwise so if Eon have been ok probably not worth the hassle of changing, which often goes awry with wrong meter readings etc.

Incorrect tracker for example is 14p kWh all day today for electricity and under 4p kWh for gas...ALL DAY

Cheap eneegy is here if you want it, have a smart meter and have a general interest in energy and energy prices to make it work for you.

You really need to stop spreading misinformation on this forum, I have read a number of your posts and what seems to happen us you drop a bomb like this full of rubbish and then never respond when challenged.

As my wife is at home with our twins, we use around the same amount of power from about 9am until 8pm.
I don't think there is much difference as the TV is on most of the day.

We already put our dishwasher on before bed so can delay that until the middle of the night quite easily.
The washing machine is loud so we'd continue to use that in the day.
We have a tumble dryer but it was only bought last year and is that new type (recycles the heat) that uses way loads less electric than others.

Think I will give it a go as the savings do seem a bit better than the Next tarriff I'd be going on to.

On Tracker you don't have to worry what time of day you are using your electric and gas. The price changes daily but is the same all day. Agile is the tariff with half hourly changes but is only really suited to those with batteries and/or perhaps electric vehicles.

Get your friend to give you their referral code and you and they will both get £50 credit.

But I can't access the tracker tariff?

I see it under their website but when I put my postcode in, it just says "flexibleOctopus" which is set rates and then Octopus Go, Cosy Octopus, Agile Octopus?

I see how to get to it.

The route is to join Flexible then ask to change to Tracker after switching.
Octopus won't switch you until they know your smart meter is working.

alternatively, and for a little more certainty, look at Eon Next Pledge. Martin’s spoken a lot about that one lately, I imagine it will be explained over on the main MSE site.

The OP should bear in mind that whilst tracker is indeed presently offering very substantial savings, this is a short term phenomenon caused by a rapid decline in wholesale prices that cannot continue indefinitely and must surely be near its end now. We will probably see the price stabilise, with the SVT falling over the next two or three quarters to reflect this, and then tracker will no longer offer anything like the same level of discount. If the wholesale price then spikes upwards for any reason, tracker will reflect this before the SVT and could actually become the more expensive product. Of-course there would then be the option to move back to the SVT at that point but you will need to keep an eye on things.
