DVD Playback problem help pls

I have bought a dvd that will not play on any of my dvd players but will play fine on the pc.It is from a small production company so it is meant for tv viewing.
When I put it in the dvd player it just comes up with a black screen and hasnt read anything, but when I insert it in the pc, it works fine.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how or what format it needs to be changed to in order to work on the dvd player please?

Many thanks in advance.

it could be their media, or your dvd player, but you already knew that.

If all of your burnt dvd work on your tv DVD player, copy your bought dvd to one of your blank DVDs using dvdshrink and try it. Dvdshrink usually tell you if it cant copy.

Some of the DVD types/dies are not compatible on some readers and there is that DVD+ and DVD- thing too that some players do not like.

Some players do not like burnt cds/dvds, but prefer the normal (etched) ones as the etching leaves a larger and more distinct pattern that is easier to read.

If the non-playing does not have a silver bottom, then it is probably burnt. Also if the content is short, then they might have used a cd instead of a dvd?

Best bet is to speak to the film company.
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)
  • Thanks for your help, I have burnt a copy through dvd shrink and that copy still wont play on any of the dvd players in the house but will play in the pc  .
I will get on to the company after the xmas period but was just hoping to be able to fix the problem myself if only temporarily,so that we can watch the film on the tv instead of the pc.

    Thanks again ;)

    is it pal or not?
your dvd player may need to be hacked into a region free model. easy enough. details on the net.
or it maybe a different format for most mainline branded dvd players. some of the cheap players are better in the respect that they play almost anything.
    Get some gorm.

I have both a Philips dvd recorder and a couple of cheap players and it wont play on any,I changed the format on the Philips to NTSC to see it that helped and it didnt. They are all region free players

    Thanks though;)

It might not be DVD Video at all. It may be encoded using MPEG4 standards. Have you looked at the files via the computer?

    Maybe Mediainfo can help.
  • This is the kind of thing I was thinking of..... maybe if I could find a programme that can convert the current dvd files to ones that will play on my dvd player.... its just that I dont know which programme to use and which is the right file type to convert to ?? and how do I find out what types of files they currently are?

    TIA
  • This seems to cover what you want and to be written by someone who knows what they're talking about, it may be worth a try. Good luck.

  • Im wondering if the file on the dvd is a compressed DIVX or XVID these are formats commonly used by file sharers to upload films. they compress a film from 3 gigs to around 700mb. DVD players that are DIVX compatible are out there which may not help you short term. There is a program called Convertxtodvd which you could google or find on the file sharing sites ( im led to believe)

That is what the Mediainfo program in post #6 is designed to do....to find out the current format.

If they are .avi(DivX/Xvid), you can probably use the 15 day trial version of Nero 8 using the Create & Edit Video tab once installed.

Don't install the ASK Toolbar or let Nero be the default programme for anything unless you intend to keep the program.

Hiya, thanks. I ran that programme (Mediainfo) and the files are MPEG2. This means nothing to me  .
I do have Nero8 installed as a trial version so is this appropriate?

    TIA
