Skimming ceilings - how much mess

Hi all, and compliments of the season,
I would like to have my ceilings skimmed by a plasterer. How much mess and moving would this entail? Would I need to cover everything with a sheet, or is it necessary to move furniture out completely? What about accessability? For example, in the kitchen, there are some cupboards that go up to within 1ft of the ceiling. Is the plasterer able to work around obstacles without too much trouble, or does he need to get up-close access to every square inch in order to do a good job?
Thanks for your help

I recently had out living room plastered and it made a right mess. We moved as much as we could out of the room but we were unable to move everything since we had nowhere to put it. The plasterer used dust sheets on what was left in the room but it seems that when he mixed the plaster in the room the fine powder went everywhere and found its way under the dust sheets.
If you can I would recommend moving everything out of the room.0 -
Hi this is not really a reply to your thread but more of "i need help" sort of thing! I have a concrete ceiling in my kitchen and i want to have it skimmed and then plastered i've been given a quote for £265.00! I think that's quite a lot. Also i've been told by a builder to just have it filled, then smoothed out and have it painted instead of having it plastered.
Can anyone help with some advice?0 -
Hi jinxx, £265 isn't a bad price. Before it is skimmed, usually a backing coat needs to be applied ie, bonging coat or plasterboard, then a finishing coat will be applied. You can do what the builder says, but i think plastering it will give you a better finish.

I have just had the bathroom done - ceiling, and a doorway (boarded myself) and then skimmed to match the wall on both sides. Ceiling is about 8ft x 8ft. £200.
