Or....DO become her taxi service, but be the most embarrassing 'Mum's Taxi' you can possibly be - turn up to pick her up in your dressing gown, with rollers in your hair, blasting Des O'Connor from the car stereo, and make sure you pull up right alongside her just as she is talking to a large group of cool looking people! :rotfl:

hi jaydee66 why not change back to an account with no overdraft facilty?

As the daughter is 18 she is an adult and her parents do not have the authority to specify the terms of her bank account.

It's a tough one but I think you have to do your best to educate your children as they are growing up about money along with all the other things you have to teach them, it's easy to blame the bank for offering credit but it can be refused. As parents we have to take responsibility and pass that on to our children.

I am lucky that my two have listened to me so far about credit cards and banks but it is a worry that the way of the world is credit credit credit.

If you tell her you won't help out with the car after helping her to budget you have to be strong and don't feel sorry for her at the last minute, tough love but a valuable lesson for life. Good luck.;)

Just to say thanx for all the advice. I intend to be tough on her. I have made a point of not lending her money if it is to go out since Sept and I do intend to intercept the mail when her card arrives (legal or not).

Oh and thanx on the taxi advice too. pmsl

I agree with not bailing her out, kids need to learn. My children are 8 and 15, the 8 year old will be the problem and has already been given a copy of Martin's 'TEEN CASH CLASS GUIDE' which she has begun to read and learn from. It is very good and your daughter will probably learn from it. Find it from the link on the right hand side.

I was going to mention the Teen Cash Guide too.

And remember, if she pays it off and only uses it for emergencies, it will probably be very useful and help her credit rating in the future.

Teach her good debt and bad debt - not just all debt is bad, THAT is the reason people get into debt. Because you're told not to. Same reason people smoke/drink/gamble etc.

  • The barroness and I have a 20 year old, 19 year old and a sixteen year old.

Our son has always worked while in education, he is now in his final year at university. He decided that he was going to live with his friends for his final year. The upshot was that he got his budget wrong and ended up in more debt that we, his parents had to help with. However, we suggested that he sell his car, which he had paid for. At first he was not very receptive to this idea, but when reality set in he did.

Too many kids now feel that cars etc are their God given right and I wonder how many parents have really done their kids a disservice in getting them one. My daughter told me several of the kids in her year at college got brand new cars just for passing their A Levels. My son got four straight A grades and his reward was a well done from a very proud mum and dad.

What ever your daughter does or does not do now will depend on her willingness to listen, but I think this is very irresponsible of the bank and also I aggree with others here, tough love is some of the best love their is.

She needs to make sure that she requests that her bank do not useher name for marketing activities. That way they won't send her the eternal letters offering loans etc. You can opt out of this by calling them.

Also subscribe her to the MPS so she won't get junk offering credit cards etc. (Whilst she's at it, she may as well sign up to the TPS too!)

  • Martin has done a guide for teenagers which you could download. Hopefully someone will post a link. Then I would print it off and show her. **Edit to say oops sorry someone has already mentioned this **

I would go through this with her and really explain why you feel she needs this information before going head long into taking anymore credit cards etc then tell her you trust her and think she is sensible enough to make her own judgements.

Then I would try my hardest to leave it at that and know that you have done your best to educate her, the rest is up to her.

Hard I know and I am dreading this with my children in a few years as I am better at giving advice about parenting than taking it :o:D
