Prior to exchange/completion

Hi all,

it might sound like a silly question however I am buying a new build property (First time buyer) and yet to know who the supplier of the electricity is, is this something that the housing developers will let us know? I’m hoping to exchange next week so I was wondering if once I’ve exchanged will the housing developer send over some sort of information sheet? 

I have a completion date for the 23rd February so understandably want to get some quotes in for bills.

Are you asking because you're worried about not having an electricity supply account when you move in?

If so, that's not a problem. You just take a meter reading when you move in (plus take a photo of the meter reading for extra safety), use electricity normally, and phone the electricity supplier within the first few days to set up your account.

The developers will almost certainly tell you who the supplier is - but even if they don't, you can continue to use electricity until you find out.


You'll start on the supplier's standard tariff. If they offer any other tariffs, you can ask to switch.

Once your account is set-up, you can start the process of switching to another supplier if you want to - if you can find a better fixed rate tariff etc.

  Make sure you take meter readings on the first day and ideally time/stamped photos on your phone.

The contractors building the property will have used some energy for their work, and you don’t want to be paying for it…
