Child benefit - who claims for 2nd child

me and my husband think we have made an error, just wondering what we do now!
we are married with 2 kids - a toddler and a newborn. I could’ve sworn my husband applied for my toddlers CHB back in 2021 and therefore he just needed to add our newborns application to his Gov account which he had done but today we received £96 for my second borns payment. I had actually applied for my sons.
is this ok or do we need to contact hmrc? So i would receive £24pw for my first child and my husband £24 for our second child but his first and only CHB application?

No, you can't both claim for just 1 child and get £24 for each, both should be on the same application and you will get £24 for the first and £15.90 for the 2nd. You should contact the child benefit office to get this resolved.1

It is true that you can't get the higher rate for both children, but there is no problem with each of you claiming for one child.
In fact, it can be useful, as it guarantees both of you National Insurance credits which count towards your state pensions.

You must contact the Child Benefit Office if you’re paid too much or too little.
