windows error message

Chaps,

My little girl has just inherited an old laptop, which is a touch because it saves me a few pennies.

Anyway as ever nothing is straight forward, when you turn the laptop on it goes through the xp screen and then shows the following:

"a problem has been detected, windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Tech info ***STOP 0x00000060 (0x80E3CE301, Ox0000009C, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

So is there an easy solution to this problem or am I going to have to buy one anyway.

Any help would be appreciated.

All the best

  • It is highly likely that this is not the answer what you wanted to hear, but as it is a second hand laptop with possibly loads of stuff you probably don't want on it anyway, rather than mess about, I would suggest that you reformat the hard drive and re-install xp,

Windows can be repaired, but it is a lot of effort

This is an occasion when starting from scratch is probably the best option.

If you're lucky it may turn out that you have a half decent machine when
you get rid of the rubbish that has no doubt built up on it.

note to self: must type faster or RRE will think I'm stalking him.
    Move along, nothing to see.

I have to agree with the two people above, however 'inherited an old laptop' depending on the spec it might not be wise to go to xp, windows 2000 or 98 might be better.

If you are reinstalling and wiping out the previous items, do a long format and listen to your laptop - if it keeps retrying, it is the first sign that the hdd is going duff.
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)
