I've had prospective lodgers message me to say they are at the front door - Three hours later, I respond with "Please knock or ring the door bell".Ditzy_Mitzy said: Why would the lodger send a text message to someone, her landlady, who lives in the same house? Strange thing to do...
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Yes! I've had this!
Baffled as to why they wouldn't use the doorbell or knock. Everything is done via the phone in their hands. I do not have my phone glued to me as I move around my house so frequently don't get the message until some time later, they have been standing outside the door SILENTLY!

My heating is ‘on’ 24/7, but the thermostat is set to 14 overnight so generally it doesn’t kick in unless it’s super cold. Perhaps that’s what the lodger is used to2

The house should be sufficiently warm for you to fill like taking the jacket off once you are inside. If you need to wear your coat/jacket in the house, it is too cold. I also think you have wrong prospective about students from hot countries. The coldest winter in my life was the one I spent in 17th century villa in Italy, that had no heating save electric radiators. Lodger who complain about heating are those who are from countries where there is efficient and affordable heating. You mention Siberia, it is a place when the temperature inside is at least +25, even when outside drops to -45. I frequently visit Poland - it is never cold inside there, even when the outside temperatures are below -20.

Funny how lots of people are advocating "in my day" for just not having heating on. Also in those days people smoked like chimneys, petrol was leaded, used asbestos everywhere and enjoyed very little time in retirement before dying. Times move on.10

Must say my sympathy is with the lodger as your mindset seems to be that lodgers complaining of the cold in the property are wrong, the most likely reason a text was sent at 02.40 was the vain hope it would be read and heating turned on so a nights sleep could be achieved and lodger able to function at their studies or employment in the morning.Honeylife said:Woke up this morning and checked my phone. A text message from my Lodger (at 2.40 am) asks if there is something wrong with the heating as her radiator is cold and her room is cold and she is cold.
Usually, the lodgers who moan about being cold are overseas students from tropical regions.
Like other posters I wonder about nostalgic references as to how cold houses used to be, I imagine it is nostalgia for our youth rather than scrapping ice off the inside of windows in the bleak mid winter.Play with the expectation of winning not the fear of failure. S.Clarke0 -
When we were kids in the late 70s,early 80s there was no central heating in our house or double glazing. When you woke up in the mornings the condensation would be frozen on the inside of the windows. On cold winter evenings we would huddle around a candle to keep warm; if it was really cold, dad would let us light it.

A CANDLE ! You were lucky, we only had old matches to burn that we had picked off the streetstuhse said:When we were kids in the late 70s,early 80s there was no central heating in our house or double glazing. I certainly wouldn't go back to the cold old days lol! Our heating is on all the time in the winter months, but is controlled by the thermostat so the radiators are off when the house is warm enough. During most of the day the thermostat is programmed to be 19 or 20 degrees with ability to change of things become too warm or chilly.
Between 2200 and 0700 the setting is 15 degrees and in reality the heating is off during that time as the house stays quite warm and when I get up it has rarely fallen below 18 degrees.
I live in a 4/5 bedroomed house with 3 reception rooms and current monthly DD for both gas and electricity is about £150 a month having recently reduced from £170. I expect it will soon rise again after the winter bill but we will build up credit again during the summer months.
I hate being cold and will not compromise on heating or food for that matter lol. Budgeting is the key.
Nothing clever about being cold and ill to try and prove your how frugal you are! (Never understand why this is so important to some)
