Cavity Wall insulation

Hi, after a bit of advice on free CWI. We were recently cold called info through the door by a company called skilled force suggesting we might be eligible for free CWI. My other half agreed to what he thought was someone to come give a bit more info, and the person that came ended up going round my house doing a free epc survey. Wasn't really expecting this but my other half was assured this was free. My council tax and utility bill were also requested (assuming for the eligibility check) and assured it was likely we could get CWI free. I'm a bit dubious of anything free especially from an uninitiated contact. Has anyone dealt with this company before, is this legitimate or am i right to be a tad suspicious? Thanks

  • All I can say is the Government is trying to improve the insulation of lots of houses. That is being done through third parties with leaflet drops and cold calling - not ideal but that seems the strategy. So you have this "opportunity", just make sure you don't sign anything without reading it and understanding, that way you can make sure it's free. As they will need to do stuff to your home they will need a signature at some point for your permission to proceed. Make sure you get the certificate for the work done as it goes toward your new EPC if you need to sell etc. I had a cold caller on a similar matter, they did a survey and they wanted to top-up the insulation, but I didn't need it so they were disappointed they had wasted their time.
  • Me again! I notice your OP says you had a free EPC survey, not sure if the "surveyor" was telling the truth. You will know if it was an EPC survey as they would need to up-load the report to the Government web-site. You can check by looking up your property on https://www.gov.uk/find-energy-certificate
It's free £0. I have doubts any EPC survey is free, reckon they cost £80-£100 to do. If you can't find the EPC for about the date of the visit then it was not an EPC survey. Think your "surveyor" was trying to impress you with jargon, and they were only looking at key indicators for energy inefficiencies in your property, maybe they had one day of training for that. They were trying to help you with a grant application (I hope!) but doubt it was an EPC survey.
