When to buy travel insurance

The message is to buy travel insurance as soon as you book, which is fine, but should the insurance duration be from now until i come back from my holiday, or from the date of the actual holiday? Ie im going in August 24, its Jan 24 now, so should the insurance start from Jan or Aug?

Now, if it doesn't start till August then you are not covered for anything that would prevent you going on holiday such as illness

Thanks for this, i was just planning to do a one off policy, so, if i take it out now, for the duration period of my holiday, i would be covered for cancellations if needed prior to the date of my leave.

A one off policy will ask the start and end date of the holiday but will still be in effect from the day you take the policy out for things like cancellation due to illness, death of a close family member etc.

Sorry @daveyjp but Annual cover starts on the date you want it to. Single Trip cover starts the day you buy it.

Lots of people get unstuck because they set the start date of an annual policy to be the date they go on holiday and then are not covered for an illness they develop between now and then or their parents pass a few days before their travel etc.
