Fixing vehicle prior to insurance settlement

Hi all, after waiting over a year my insurance company has finally agreed to settle my insurance claim after my car was stolen and written off. Since the settlement was taking too long I repaired the car myself and now the insurance company wants to reassess the car. Could this affect how much settlement I can get?

Please let me know how to handle this situation.

Fixed it yourself as in took it to a garage to get it fixed and paid an invoice or got the hammer and spray paint out and personally fixed it at no cost?

if its the later then its likely to impact it, if nothing else there would be no VAT consideration to make.
