Cavity wall insulation

I am investigating the possibility of having cavity wall insulation installed, and would like to get an idea of the feasibility, risks and likely benefits. The primary motivation is that the house is freezing cold in the winter, and barely gets above 13 degrees even after a couple of hours with the central heating on. We…

A house built around 1970 will normally have a 50mm to 75mm cavity with no insulation. Although in theory the U value was 1.7 there's a big difference between a well built cavity wall and a badly built one. If the brickwork joints aren't properly filled, and the cavity not closed at the top the convection currents reduce the thermal efficiency lower than a solid wall.
