Cavity wall insulation

A house built around 1970 will normally have a 50mm to 75mm cavity with no insulation. Although in theory the U value was 1.7 there's a big difference between a well built cavity wall and a badly built one. If the brickwork joints aren't properly filled, and the cavity not closed at the top the convection currents reduce the thermal efficiency lower than a solid wall.0
