Bathroom hot water problem

Options
We have a really preculiar problem with hot water supply in upstairs bathroom. Last night daughter turned on hot tap and no water came out, then it came out in a spurt and slowed down to a trickle. Turning tap on and off made no difference and hot water tap to the bath was also running slowly.

When we got up this morning it all seemed OK again, but late this afternoon same problem has re-appeared.

The hot water supply to downstairs kitchen tap is not affected though

Can anyone shed any light on this oddity for us please? will it need a plumber to fix (have not much spare cash so could do without large bill ) and if it needs a plumber will it be likely to cost a lot? Husband is reasonably proficcient at DIY so could follow clear instructions if anyone has any? We have an electric immersion heater if that makes a difference? and no gas boiler or anything

Thanks in advamce for any advice help

If you have a cold water tank feeding the hot water cylinder, check that there is a good flow of water going into it.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Will do - we can hear the tank filling when hot water runs through taps (still v-e-r-y slowly) so we know water is going in, but husband will get up in loft and check it all looks OK

  • Had this problem once and it turned out that replacing the tap cured the problem. I wondered perhaps the washer was fouling somewhere and not opening fully.

It was one of those taps with a domed rubber washer fitted to a "loose" jumper like this:

I figured maybe the domed washer was becoming wedged in the seat of the tap, but never got round to verifying the cause of the prob.

Worth taking the tap apart before going any further.
