Tax back from travel?

A work colleague told me of a website where he earnt tax back from clothes, fuel etc. He got quite a bit. I also used to drive. He got tax relief whilst a full time worker.
I purchased fuel.
I forgot this website which I do not see this colleague anymore.
I've even caught a taxi to work around 20 times in short space of time.
I travel to work from one location to another and have to spend quite a bit on train travel. I'm on one location on a temp basis.
Is it possible I can earn tax back for travel? Although someone said it does not cover train travel.

Are you an employee?
Are you classed as a home worker or work place based?
Are you saying that you commute to different places on different days, or that once you get to work in the morning you then had to travel somewhere else during the course of the day? And if you do you travel between workplaces during your working hours what is your employers policy and reimbursing? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
You'd be better to ask on the Cutting Tax board, but if you do you need to be much clearer about your situation as @elsien has suggested.

If you are employed your employer should pay for any travel costs outside of commuting. You will get tax relief on private vehicle mileage up to 45p a mile. Commuting costs aren't tax deductible.
If you are self employed your costs of travel should be part of your accounts and self assessment/company tax return.0 -
Greg89,
You can claim tax back on work related expenses directly via the HMRC website:
https://www.gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employees
The HMRC website should take you through the process.
You can claim for travel as part of your job but not for commuting.
Hope this helps

Would I be able to claim tax back on travel expenses such as train travel to work?
I work at a physical location and on a temp basis have to go to different locations.
I do not travel once I'm in the job, I just travel to get to work.0 -

Although your colleague may have gpt a refund that may not be the end of the matter. There is a whole host of dodgy tax 'agents' who promise the earth but when HMRC enquire into the claim at a later date the agent won't want to know as their cut is safe and the poor colleague is left paying all the tax back plua interest.1

if your contracted to work at several locations and this is your commute then it doesn’t qualify for tax relief.
if you are contracted to one location and they are asking you to go elsewhere then it might qualify but possibly you’ll have to deduct your normal commute.
if your wearing normal clothes to work that’s not tax deductible, if there is a uniform or dress code then it might qualify assuming your employer didn’t provide the uniform.
its possible your friend is claiming things they shouldn’t be.
this is all available easily via HmRC so no need to use a website.
the website may be giving bad advice (we don’t know) but there is absolutely no need to get outside help on this.1 -
Be very careful using these companies.
If you have a henuine caim you can do it yourself doirect with HMRC.
Many people who have used these sites have ended up getting a demand by HMRC to pay back the whole of the claim. That includes the money the company take as commission, before passing on the remainder of the refund.
Eg. claim for £2000
Company take 25% , passing on the balance £1500
HMRC demand back £2000
