Has anyone used one of these?   Does anyone have any experience of whether the cheaper ones are adequate or whether I should be looking at a more expensive one?

ETA, fancying one with a proper screw on clamp rather than a suction one.

  • I have one of these (looks exactly like the one in the link). I use it every year to prepare the apples from my trees usually about 2 crisp boxes full. Works really well. You are correct though a clamp would be much better, I use a G clamp to fix mine to the table.
  • I guess it might have a purpose if there is an industrial glut of apples but generally (and this applies to lots of fancy kitchen gadgets) a sharp knife will do.

So much to read, so little time.
  • True if you’re just making an apple crumble, but when I had several apple trees and wanted to process as much as possible for the freezer, it would have taken ages.

I bought one from Lakeland, similar design, and it was invaluable.  You still need to chop/slice them but it saves a lot of time.

Having a viable fruit tree with an unblemished yield would make it worth the investment, I agree!

Definitely go for the clamp one - and if it slices as well as peels & cores, even better!

The one I have does a spiral slice at the same time as peeling so no need for slicing and chopping after the apple comes out.
  • Yes sorry mine spirals, I’d forgotten that - just need to chop them. Sadly I no longer have apple trees so it hasn’t been used for a while.

Great if you want to dehydrate apples,  just one cut to make half moons that are easy to load. And adjusts well to different sizes.
