Have you tried replacing the cable from the speakers to the computer? Getting another music player to test?.
Do you have an audio lead from the Cd player to the motherboard? Some cd players will play sound through normal ide cables and some will not.
When you turn your audio system on dose it makes a popping sound thud sound?
When your turn the volume up does you hear a hissing sound from the speakers?
This computer of yours is a hard one to work out? But will get there in the end.I'm not poor i'm just skint0 -
Set some music playing. Make sure that the volume controls are all turned up on the computer and the speakers (and the mute is unticked). Then plug the speakers into all the connections one by one in the back of the computer that will fit the plug.
If a sound card is installed, you can have more than one set of holes that will take the speaker jack. If you get no sound from any of the holes, then it is likely a hardware or software issue.
Look all over the connections at the back of the computer. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Few things some are obvious.
Are your speakers plugged into the mains and turned on?
My DD had an old pc that supplied the power to the speakers, when she got a new one, we had to get new speakers as there was no seperate power supply for them (new pc did not supply them with power)
double click the little speaker icon down in the tray and click options /advanced now make sure none of the little boxes is ticked for mute.Slide the sliders up if they are at the bottom.
Options /properties check the mixer device is the sound card if there is more than one option.
If you have a self build, you may have audio drivers on your motherboard's CD.
You may have to enable onboard sound in the BIOS if you have onboard sound rather than a sound card. You may have to disable onboard sound if it is enabled but you have a sound card.
hope something here is useful anyway.0 -
Thank you all for your suggestions! I am working my way through them.
TBH, I have tried most things suggested but I will continue until I win.0 -

No!

Yes, more of a humming sound though.0 -
If it's humming, then there's a good chance it's in the wrong socket, or possibly a faulty lead/jack. Try jiggling it avbout in each of the sockets, but make sure to turn it down a bit first.I haven't been asked to tell you that I'm the Board Drunk for this board. Another thought. The bios might be configured to use the onboard sound in which case it either needs to be changed or try plugging into the sockets up the side of the back of the PC, which are the sockets connected directly to the mother board.0
