How long for HMRC to respond to tax on a Simple Estate

As per https://www.gov.uk/probate-estate/reporting-the-estate the executor of my late relative's estate (having sold all of the assets to cash) will soon be reporting the tax owed on this 'simple' estate by writing a letter to the HMRC with details of interest and dividends received into the estate during the administration period.

As some of the queues we've had to deal with have lasted into multiple months,  I wondered whether there was anyone out there who has had to do a similar thing recently and had knowledge on how long it might take for the HMRC to reply on how to pay the tax due.

Well, in case anyone was wondering or if someone should come across in the future, the executor has just rung to say that a reply from the HMRC has just arrived and has given the details of how much is owed - which fortunately does match what we thought it would be.

So, just over two months for a reply - I wonder whether they'd mind if we took a few months to send them the cash

Thanks for this, sent a letter on 08/03/24 and still waiting so guess it is normal, but can't distribute final amounts until I know.  In the mean time more interest is accrued so the amounts I told them are incorrect.  It is literally some bank interest, which falls under their £500 but also some stocks and shares that were cashed in, and I have no idea what it means when talking current gain and then amount treated as paid to work it out.
