I would have absolutely no compunction in paying for my shopping in loose change. I do this very often, although not, to be honest, for £50 (so far  ).
I understand that there are legal 'limits' as to the amount of small change that shops are legally obliged to accept in one transaction, but this has never caused me any problems. I am definitely not going to pay 8% to one of those 'coin converter' machines.
However, I do pre-count change into bags.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

I don't see the point in collecting change. It earns no interest and causes you problems getting rid of it. Just spend it when you have it.
It depends on the change. With coins there is a lower limit on what value it can be."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

When I worked at Natwest people would come in with bags of change apologising that I had to count it all.
Couple of points being that a) it was my job to count money, whether it was this person's change or 5 people's small withdrawls, didn't matter to me and b) I could just weigh it all on the machines!

I saved £212 in £2 coins for this Christmas. I didn't exchange them at a bank I just spent them - they disappeared rapidly. It's better that the woman paid for her shopping rather than buying via credit card so well done to her." The greatest wealth is to live content with little."

I was in Asda yesterday and a young woman in front of me at the till paid for £50 of her shopping in 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p and a few £ coins.
I'm impressed that she wasn't afraid to get the wrath of the cashier and the customers behind her in the queue!
I was too busy thinking "she has to be an MSE" to even feel impatient as the cashier counted out all the change lol!
I think thats just bloody bad manners and rather selfish! I always make the effort of bagging up my loose change into money bags and paying into my bank account and THEN going shopping. So her laziness/bad planning causes a massive inconvenience to lots of other shoppers at an already stressful time. Poor show.0 -
