Recommendations for home and contents insurance

Hi

our house insurance provider sent a letter saying they can’t renew our policy, for no apparent reason, we have never made a claim etc,

But now I have to find a new provider, so looking for people experience with providers good and bad

TIA

I'm with NFU Mutual and have been very happy with their fair pricing and whenever I've needed to discuss anything over the phone.  I have only made claims under their legal expenses but the service I have received from NFU Mutual has been faultless.

There will always be an element of luck involved in any interaction, no matter the overall standard of a company everyone has a few bad apples or agents having an off day etc. The reality is 99% of people won't have enough interactions with their insurers to make a real informed decision on if they are good or bad. Secondly what is good or bad is very subjective and based in part on your expectations.

if you look at review sites, 95% of positive reviews are about how cheap insurance is. 80% of negative reviews are about claims but then if you do a bit of digging/thinking many complaints are "unfair"... hit and run accident complaining that they have to pay their excess, well thats how insurance works and would have been the same with all but a handful of insurers.

If price is no object then the likes of Hiscox and other HNW insurers tend to have the most comprehensive policies and good customer service to go with it, though many are only sold via brokers (Hiscox has a direct offering).

NFU is probably more MNW but slanted towards rural properties, if you fit into their socio-economic target but are urban (in lifestyle) then you may find the excessively expensive.

There are plenty of large insurance groups, eg Aviva, that have the full spectrum from a HNW offering all the way to the bargain basement online only offering. The product quality and potentially service will be linked to the level you are buying at.

Personally insured by M&S which is Aviva behind the scenes, policy meets our needs well but only made 1 claim (it would be unfair to judge the claim due to my industry connections)
