The first two weeks are the worst but stick with it, it will be well worth it.
The best of luck to you.
Mark Twain said "giving up was easy" he had done it dozens of times.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
Hello ebsay2000
I'll move your thread to the 'Health & Beauty' board.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Most pharmacies have NRT's on offer during January. Alternatively, as already suggested you could go to your GP who could prescribe NRT's and then you'll just have to pay an NHS prescription charge unless of course you are exempt then it will be free.-->♥<-- Sugar Coated Owl -->♥<--

I was told by a heart surgeon that nicotine patches are just a racket for the drug companies to make a lot of money. Your body is completely clear of nicotine in just a few days, so what is the point of sticking on endless patches that are probably just keeping nicotine in your system. I think the hardest thing to cope with when giving up is the actual ritual of smoking - the holding of the cigarette and puffing it.
Believe me I am no saint, I had intended to give up in the New Year, but was struck down with a flu type bug on Boxing Day and thought it made sense to give stopping a go. I don't know if I will succeed, but will certainly give it a go.
Any other time when I have a bug (sore throat, cough etc) I just keep right on smoking away, even though they taste absolutely foul and obviously make the cough worse, but after 36 years of smoking perhaps I have at last come to my senses.
Lots of experts say that you really have to want to stop for yourself and get it right in your head to achieve it. No matter how many people say you should, ultimately it is completely down to you.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -

Just to wish you luck - they helped me quit a 35-40 a day habit. It took the full 10 weeks and then I suddenly realised I didn't need them any more! I would stand near to smokers like the bisto kid
.
You really have to have made up your mind to stop once and for all though, or you will fail, I know, I smoked for 25 years and tried stopping cos I thought I ought to before coming to my senses! Eight years on I can't believe I ever smoked, and don't get me started on the smell now though :wave:0 -
Hi ya ebsay2000,
Good for you for wanting to give up the evil weed. I'm toying with the idea myself but I can't say as I'm fully committed towards it yet.
Anyway as for the patches you can get them on prescription from your GP. DH has had 2 lots so far but is still smoking. That's not cos the patches don't work he just hasn't used them yet.
I've tried them in the past. I've found that they sort of keep the edge off the cravings but I still wanted a fag.
I'm gonna go cold turkey when I do pack up again. I just feel so awful when I do stop though. Having said that I stop drinking coffee at the same time which sort of hits me as a double whammy really. No nicotine or caffine. Probably why I feel so dizzy and clammy.
But give it a go. And good luck. It really is only a couple of weeks and then your over the worst of it. Just don't do what I've done 4 or 5 times before and have just ONE fag.0 -
You can get them free on the NHS as has been said, but some doctors surgerys only do that if you go to their no smoking clinic. You could check with your doctors to find out their policy on this.
If you still wish to buy them i have in the past bought them from ebay very cheaply. Also this time of year chemists tend to have some offers.
Sadly I'm still smoking, but my best sucess came from using the inhalators, boots are cheaper than nicorette. It didn't sort out the habbit of having something in my hand etc, but I did stay off the cigs the longest using this method. I also didn't use anywhere as many cartriges as they suggested, I just kept the same one in most of the day and used it just to curb that urge of what to do with my hands.
Not sure what the number is but you could always give the NHS stop smoking helpline a call who could advise you on the options avalible to you via the NHS to try and quit.0
