Dripping Tap From Handle

Hi,

My kitchen mixer tap has suddenly started dripping from underneath the hot tap (only when used). I've attached a picture to show the joint where the drip is.

I'm capable of basic DIY, but that's about it. I took the tap apart and replace the black "O-Ring" inside the hot tap. But the leak continues and it's actually got slightly worse.

Can anyone suggest what to try next? I'm trying to avoid the need for a plumber or an entire new tap! I'm thinking that maybe the hot cartridge needs replacing?

Thank you!

  • 1. No picture showing that I can see.
    2. Which O ring?  Most taps have several.
    3. Remove the cartridge and replace (assumes quarter turn tap):
    3.1 Isolate water.
    3.2 Remove handle.
    3.3 Unscrew cartridge .
3.4 Identify type and size of cartridge.  Make and model of tap if known, otherwise by measurement.  See tapmagician.co.uk for how to measure.
3.5 Screwfix do a small range of cartridges ("glands").  If you are lucky, one of these might fit.  If so purchase and skip to 3.7.
3.6 If you have to mail order, reassemble tap.
3.7 If reassembled, disassemble tap again, fit new cartridge.

If you remove that decorative chrome cover but leave the cartridge in place, hopefully you'll be able to pinpoint where - exactly - the drip is coming from.
It could even be coming from the swivel spout, and trickling down on the outside until it lands on that part. So, kitchen-paper it all bone dry, and shine a torch on it

@ThisIsWeird I will do that, thank you. What would be the fix if it's coming from the swivel spout? Replace the O-Rings on that spout?

I've ordered a replacement cartridge, so that will be my next step.

Yes. New O rings. Most likely it is the cartridge, tho', but don't assume...

  • Just a quick update. The new cartridge arrived and I installed it today. No signs of leaking since. Fixed it for £15 for the part and a bit of online research. Thanks everyone.
