How to get WhatsApp notifications on Apple Watch?

Yes, I've tried Googling, or rather YouTubing.
I got an AW for my mother for Xmas & I've been trying to set it up for her this weekend (were waiting on other things arriving hence the delay).
One thing I noticed was she's not getting WhatsApp messages coming up on her AW. I'll send her one & her phone will ding once the message comes through but there's zero on the watch itself.
YouTube told me to go in to the Watch App > Notifications > scroll down to WhatsApp & make sure it's checked green - it was already, so this isn't the answer.
Another video said on the phone:
Settings > Notifications > WhatsApp - allow notifications (they were anyway)
Scroll to the bottom > "Whatsapp notification settings" > Make sure show notifications is green (it was anyway).
I haven't tested the actual text messaging app out as I don't get a signal at my mothers but regardless of what, this should work - I', just trying to find out why it's not.
Edited to add - sleep detection ... also didn't detect sleep last night.
Watch > sleep > track sleep with apple watch.
That's ticked green. Does anything else have to be done to detect sleep or should it really auto-detect it?
I know I've had once or twice with my Samsung & Garmin not detecting it but that's once or twice over the past 3 or so years. This is first night so wondering if something is wrong in settings maybe.
For the record, the watch isn't worn mega tight nor can it rotate on the wrist. I've worn mine slacker & still detected sleep.

I don't know about the WhatsApp notifications but for sleep tracking, it only works when sleep focus is on. You might find the watch app AutoSleep useful because it can auto detect sleep without that focus mode, and more.
