Tax on Ebay Sales

Hi I am confused on the new rules for tax and selling on Ebay. I am a private seller just getting rid of owned unwanted items and although I understand the rules about the £1,000 pound limit or 30 sales a year, I am confused if these limits are to be calculated in tax years ie April to April or January to December each year? I have searched the internet and still unsure on this, does anyone know? Thank you
