Moving from south to north

  • The trouble is the house prices make it so unaffordable in the south, we are renting a 4 bed atm for £2.0000 pm which is such a waste, we have lived in the south all our lives and the change is exciting if not scary as well.
  • It's no use just saying a mortgage of £130.00, how much deposit would you have, that would give the total house price you would be looking at and for that amount how many bedrooms would you want, would it need to be in an area with good public transport links, good schools, plenty of employment opportunities etc. etc.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.
  • £20k deposit, 4 bedrooms.
does not need to have amazing transport links as we both drive.

We have done exactly this. Moving from the Midlands on nothing more than a desire to live near walking country, the sea and a new challenge.
We moved to 20 minutes outside of Durham. Found a cheap house in a decent area (ex mining west of Durham) nice house though and quiet.

Exactly what we wanted whilst my partner looked for a new job and a house that we wanted to move to permanently
Found one up in Northumberland which we are currently doing up from top to bottom.work should be complete June and we will put this house on the market Easter time and move out during the summer
I would avoid east County durham.  Quite a lot of deprevation
West County durham has its bad areas but we are so close to the pennines and amazing walking country
Live virtually a school. The whole area is quiet and very easy to get into newcastle driving / bus
If you want to buy our house it Will be on the market for around 85k!

West County durham so under rated and close to the A1 so it's good all round

  • Thank you for your comment, can I ask where exactly your house is or roughly and how many bedrooms it has ?

  • Nottinghamshire, a little bit over your budget but it gives you an idea what is available.

Barnard Castle is nice if you go a bit further out.

Only if you need your eyes testing  :D

(Sorry, someone had to say it  ;):p ) (I'll get my coat ... !!!)
Sorry... I don't get it! (Autistic)
Having his eyes tested was Dominic Cummings' excuse for going to Barnard Castle during lockdown.

I have done a very quick scan on Right Move in areas that I know that tend to be cheap, as they are in the bottom few per cent of places with low incomes etc.
Even here you are struggling to find 4 bedroom semis for £150K , although the odd one pops up that is not an 'investment property' or ' needs modernisation ' has sitting tenants'.
Drop to 3 bedrooms and you get a lot more choice.
  • I think you will find in the North most of the cheap houses are terraced. Bedrooms?  majority when they were built had 3 bedrooms upstairs but no bathroom, so often a bathroom was put in making 2 bedrooms plus a bathroom upstairs. Or 3 bedrooms were kept and a downstairs bathroom off the kitchen

Very few had 4 bedrooms so very few cheap 4 bedroom houses today.
