US Debt with my email attached

Hi all

Apologies if this isn't the right forum for this.

I just got an email from a debt collection agency saying there’s an outstanding smartpay debt for someone with my name. It’s for a US postal address.

The agency is January who I've checked and are legitimate, and the email is definitely from them.

I emailed clarifying I live in the UK and it’s not my debt but haven’t had a response yet.

I had one similar thing last year where someone paid for a hotel but gave my email address - in this case leaving no outstanding debt as far as I could see.

I’m not especially concerned about this but I just wanted to double check there’s nothing more I should do if these kinds of things happen. I wouldn’t want to have any trouble when visiting the US later in the year!

Ignore it.  It's either a case of mistaken identity, or else a plain old phishing attempt.  If you genuinely owed someone money, you'd get an old-fashioned letter through your letterbox.
In the unlikely even that you do receive a genuine letter, your just reply with the standard "Prove-It" letter (template available on the Debt-Free Wannabe board).
