  • Is the bill addressed to you personally or the occupier?

I think you know the way forward - ask BG!

    Welcome to the forum.
You'll need to give a lot more information otherwise we'll all be guessing.
What exactly are the charges and which period does it cover?  Did you register with BG when you moved in  or did you inherit someone else's key or card?
It's certainly possible to have debit on a prepayment meter.  Debt can be added if someone is moved from a credit account that was in debt.  The standing charge can also cause debt to accrue if no top ups are made, e.g. an unoccupied property or a lock-up garage.
