Why so long to issue final bill after switching suppliers?

We switched from British Gas to Octopus at the beginning of December and have been advised it will take 6 weeks to issue the final bill even though we have a smart meter and BG agreed with the final meter reading 2 days after the switch happened.  Needless to say our account is £1k in credit and after calculating our expected final bill it is only expected to  come to around £350 (easy to calculate as the smart meter tells us what we used  between the date of the last bill and the switch date). I wonder if they would take so long to issue a final bill had we been in debit rather than credit.

They have up to six weeks to render a final account/refund credit. After that they have to pay compensation.

I switch my electricity from EDF to Octopus from 1st Jan (Gas is still with EDF due to ongoing issue that is being dealt with via the Energy Ombudsman).

So far, its has been ok - EDF updated by my DD to electricity only on 2nd Jan and their online account is pretty much electricity only now (though its still called "Electricity and Gas account").

I've been on 6-monthly billing with EDF, so it will be interesting to see when I get my final electricity bill. I think the next bill is due towards the end of January, and since I'm still with them for gas, it would make sense that my final electricity one is included in that.
