i starting to think day insurance when in use may be cheaper than an annual policy, SORN it the rest of the time

Try Bymiles.
You pay for the car to be parked, then a per mile charge.
Like a mobile contract at the end of the month.
Via a black box you attach to the obd2 port.
Standard insurance for me is £1100 ish if not more.
Bymiles was £105 parked and 9.5p a mile.
