weenancyinAmerica said:Cherryfudge - I don't know if any of your libraries do 3-D printing, but ours does, and the man running the program is able to make small parts for things on the printer. I wonder if your clock repairer could look into it as it is much cheaper here anyway. Something I had never considered before last week as he was giving me a demonstration of what he can do.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Our libraries do here in Scotland and at home in Dublin. There are programmes that will design the piece for you to be sent to the printer. It may be worth checking eBay etc to see if someone has taken a similar clock for parts1

I might wait till my sister gets back, @WelshmansDaughter as she'll be in Scotland and might have better access than I have. It's a great idea to get the cog printed but I now know our local libraries can't do it - we're a bit rural but the main library is nearby and they don't do 3D printing so the smaller ones won't either.
I think the repair man is searching his stores in case he can find a donor part but apparently it's unlikely as clocks were made locally and there don't seem to have been national standards at all. I've no idea what we are looking for but once the repair man gets back to us, we can talk specifics.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

DH and I were both doing refreshments after church this morning: I learned that most people can actually serve themselves if no one is available to pour! This is worth knowing, though the big catering flasks can be a bit tricky as some are push-button and some have a lever to pump the drinks out. Someone asked me and I had to ask another person what to do!
Afterwards DH made southern fried chicken for dinner. We've not had it for a while and it was very nice, and a lot quicker than the traditional Sunday dinner.
Both of us took advantage of the warm sunshine this afternoon. DH went on his favourite walk and I tackled more of the garden. It's really hard to see progress, but I enjoy it anyway. More weeding and more cutting back shrubs, and I've finally potted on the peppers. I also gave the houseplants some food and water. They won't recognise this person who isn't letting them wilt! Unfortunately I've also given myself a muscular niggle so I may end up taking ibuprofen before work tomorrow just to make things go a bit more easily.
I tried the new cleaner on the bathroom floor and I need to email the company as it's now super-slippery, and there's no warning not to use it on flooring. I'll try to do that before bed tonight.

Apparently the result of 3-D printing can withstand a lot - they are using it to build houses and to make cars! Of course, the first thing I thought when I found our library making things is more junk in the world. But the young man has been holding classes weekly with quite a following. They did have to make a ruling that you couldn't make weapons out of it here at the library (they are worried about using it make guns now). You also can design it to any pattern. So your clockmaker friend might be able to find parts easier.2

If it can make houses and cars, it's pretty tough! I had a chat with DH about it and he thinks the clockmaker may prefer to go old school (he of 50 years' experience) but I think it may be worth asking, if he doesn't find a matching piece in his stash. I keep thinking of Steve from the Repair Shop, complete with multiple pairs of glasses as in the Comic Relief episode... do you get the Repair Shop series in the US? Steve is the clock mender.
Today has been pretty busy. The sore arm woke me up a couple of times but once I got it moving and took some pain killers, it's not been bad at all. I went over to church to do the cleaning there at lunch time and afterwards went to the supermarket as I had some offers about to expire. Annoyingly, reception was very poor so the app couldn't give me access to some things I would have bought so now that I'm home and can see them, I'm wondering if I need to go back. They are things we buy often and the saving would be worthwhile.
Anyway, even without those extras, I got some nectar points and did really well for half price fruit: avocados, strawberries, cherries and oranges. It must be summer with all those!
Work this evening also proved interesting: I used to ask if I was on a two or three hour shift but stopped because I was always getting two hours. I thought they probably give three hours to newbies to encourage them then drop to two once they've speeded up. However, I've noticed recently that a lot of people were on three hours so I asked again tonight. It was only two hours but it turns out the managers were under the impression I preferred two, and in fact some of the runs I've done are supposed to be three, but they would rather someone worked for two hours than that an area isn't cleaned. So I've set the record straight and am hoping I get more hours in future.

Good job you asked about the shifts. Hopefully you get a few more hours now. Good to swell the coffers 💰I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)1

Tuesday was a busy day for DH, as he fixed a leak under the kitchen sink so that cupboard is now clean and tiny with two ancient items set aside for the tip (cleaning products we never used, which I think came from Mum's house) and some duplicates moved to the store cupboard upstairs. After this he meant to change the oil in the car (long overdue) but that turned into a myriad of smaller jobs like finding the right sized spanners and spending £80+ on some equipment to hoist the car more steadily than the jack does. It's now all in place for him to do on Saturday, but got a bit derailed by some black paint spilling in the shed. He managed to get this cleared up, but somehow although I had minimal contact with the shed, I got paint on my sleeve. Fortunately it was a scruffy top, but I think I've got all the paint out with white spirit and the top is spending the night on the washing line rather than let the smell into the house.
I spent a bit of time sorting out a new email to use with the debt advice centre, and texting various people to let them know Patrick Grant's book 'Less' was in Kindle daily deals for 99p. I should be on commission as about eight people have bought it, not including me. I started it this evening and I like his writing style.
The recycling bins have gone for collection, not just the main one but the one for glass jars (that's not been for so long that there were four yeast extract jars in it) and the jam-packed green waste bin.
My friend who was hosting our group tonight was very jet-lagged so I took salad round to hers and she provided pizza and we had a catch-up. We ended up looking at her photos instead of the study, but I don't think we'd have got far with studying as she was so tired. I now have a fridge full of salad things that I didn't plan but will eat. I also discovered L1dl is doing a trio of lettuces that seem to have been grown very close in a single pot then just eased out with the root ball intact and bagged up. Needless to say I bought some, chopped enough leaves for tonight and the rest is stuck in a jug to see if it grows.
I have decided I am by nature a scavenger.
Our printer ink ran out today and DH discovered he'd put the date - last October - when we previously replaced the cartridge. That's not too bad, and he's found somewhere online where he can get the genuine cartridges for our printer for about £16, which is a few pounds less than we paid last time.
My trip to L1dl was far too expensive as I fell for their advertising and stocked up on jams and chocolate as well as the salad. Their main brand of jam is too nice and I buy it for treats like making a special cake, but end up using it as ordinary, which is of course exactly what they want but it loses the treat value.
I have to be up in the morning so I will call it a day for now.

I wish I’d known about the book however I’ve reserved a copy from the library.
I’ve gotten a very interesting book called Home Comforts by Cheryl Mendelson which I think does cover a bit of the same2
