Rather than contacting electricity suppliers at random, she should contact her Distribution Network Operator (DNO). They will be able to advise whether she has a supplier or not.

Could you give a bit more detail on how not having an electricity supplier means she can't pay the mortgage? The two don't seem to be related?

    Hi,
if she is not paying for electricity what has that got to do with the mortgage?

I think the point is she needs to sell her home and cannot do so until the electricity supply situation is sorted out.
As already mentioned, @Crawford33 contact the DNO for your area.  They will be able to give you the Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN).  Once you have the MPAN then tracing the supplier history should be straightforward.
It is possible that there is no MPAN, this can happen with flats and apartments where the supply is provided via a landlord, or was at some time in the past.  Not that unusual for the supplier history to be unclear in this particular situation, it may even be that the meter that supplies a home just isn't now registered with anyone.  I've seen this a few times in former council housing, where the council used to administer the meters in a building, then a housing association took over and somehow some of the meters got missed in the transfer.
I have to warn that there may well be some difficult questions asked about why the home has had a free supply of electricity for all those years.  As long as your daughter can show the attempts to trace the supplier I believe there should be a reasonable defence.

I can only assume the OP believes it will hinder selling the property?

It will.  It's a standard question before sale now.  Not sure when this came in but it was one of the standard questions I had to answer when I sold a house about 8 years ago.

  • It's one question that you can put do not know on and won't stop a sale. So if desperate don't let this stop them putting the property up for sale.

I'm not so sure about that, especially in the case of someone that needs to sell quickly because of their financial situation.  Not sure I'd want to buy a home that had this sort of electricity supplier problem going on for 15 years, TBH.  Resolving this very long standing problem is probably key to getting a quick sale, or even, perhaps, any sale.  Best get it sorted if for no other reason than peace of mind at a stressful time.
