i have noticed the paint peeling/some mould on ceiling on past few week and came to the realisation the fan isn[t working.

i removed the panel in the bathroom and cleaned the mesh filter and beyond that is just the duct pipe going into the attic and tried to clean any obstruction as far as i could (nothing noticeable)
the actual fan would be in the attic i imagine - has this been fitted correctly?

and i also checked the exit path outside the house and removed the panel and i can hear it air blowing out.

so it looks like the on the bathroom side, its not taking in air?

what's the best way to troubleshoot this and likely cause?
do i have to get into the attic? i have never done this before so any help would be appreciated especially if i could fix myself and save £

the extractor fan is fairly new as we did the bathroom up about 18 months ago.

  • The hose has probably fallen off the fan body if it's a remotely mounted fan in the loft. It's an easy DIY job with a couple of tie wraps or duct tape.

And do check that the fan vents to the outside and not just in to the loft space. The last thing you want up there is a lot of warm damp air causing condensation.

  • hi guys an update.

i checked the fan vents outside and it is blowing air outside, i gave that a clean
i checked the bathroom extractor and it seems to be sucking in air now and i did the "toilet tissue" test and it does collect the tissue to the surface - so it seems to be working but not sure how effectively

so its definatelly pulling in air from the bathroom and releasing air externally (outside vent)

as it was a powerful extractor i did get..

  • It has been known for flexible ducting to sag, and the sump to fill with condensation water. Particularly if the ducting is uninsulated, and/or if the fan has no run-on, or is not often used. Sometimes the weight pulls the ducting off the fan, if it doesn't rest on the loft floor first.

  • the fan is

Whenever I've fitted these, I mount them to the rafters rather than the joists and take the ducting up to it from the bathroom and the outlet so that any condensation runs back down rather than collecting in the pipe. I also use insulated flexible piping.

I had an extractor fan fitted in my new bathroom a few years ago & frankly it was never up to the task.  For 30 mins of showers a day it was on 24/7 & still got mould.  A dehumidifier a year later worked like magic.  All the extractor did was cause drafts.  A humidity meter proved the outcome.
