Potterton 80 combi

Options
Merry Christmas

4 am this moring and boiler as given up.
16 to wash and cook for in few hours, Should be fun.

Any way it appears the main board as burnt out on the boiler, for the second time.
I know we are going to have to struggle until such time as places are open.
We live in Manchester and I am wondering if any plumbers can point me in the right direction as to a supplier of these things in the area.

Many thx.

I do sympathise with you, and I have a couple of children who can't get their new Ipods to work!

If the main board is still giving you problems in this way I can only think you may have a PSU problem or a short. I don't know about boilers but if this is the case you really need to be talking to Potterton in the new year to find out whether there is an underlying fault.

    Thx Hugo

We had a board replaced a few years ago.
Which had burnt out in top right corner.
It has done the same thing again.
So I can assume it is a common fault.
Not sure how old the boiler is now as time passes so quick at a guess 5 years plus.
I am sure Potterton would not have anything to do with it.
So cheapest option would be to fit a new board or pcb if that is what they call them.

Do you know of a local supplier to Manchester?
    Thx

ps: Good luck with the ipods

Don't know how much you would have to pay for a replacement locally but this may be of interest to you here.

  • Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)
  • One can only sympathise with the OP, it couldn't really happen at a worse time.

Hope you will forgive this Christmas tale.
Thought I was in the same spot when our boiler shut down just as we were going out on Sunday evening. No time to investigate and came home late to freezing house.
Hopes raised when we awoke to find boiler working OK.
Hopes dashed when at 4pm Christmas Eve it shut down again.
Boiler on, pump and fan running, just will not ignite. Error code S.33.
Hunt down installation manual which says "check flue". Outdoors with torch identifies the problem. A Christmas robin redbreast has taken to roosting in the flue discharge. Robin evicted (Christmas or not) and boiler up and running again - sighs of relief all round..
First job Christmas morning, despite the pouring rain - fit new gauze on flue discharge.
  • From memory, there is potentially a design fault on these circuit boards. (Potterton will tell you they are fine and plumbers say they are borked.)

Wasn't there something on Watchdog about this around two years ago? perhaps someone has a better memory than me.

    Hi

The Watchdog effected ones are the Potterton Suprima models and I have a Potterton engineer coming out in January regarding the PCB poblem and 'lock-outs' - (red flashing LED) offering to change this for free. It takes alot of persuation to get them to come out and do this on a free of charge basis though, as they have had so many complaints and, as such, they have changed their policy, claiming that the problem does not always lie with the PCB. Instead the standard offer is a visit on a charged basis.

Persist with them and get them out to you to fix this well-known fault.

    Wow.
What a response in our hour of need.
    Thx people.
Our model is the Potterton Puma 80e.
Well I think it is the 80e over the 80 as I have the manual with the part number which upon searching the net relates to 80e.
I think the only difference between the 2 is 80E is electronic ignition and the 80 is a permanent ignition.
Strange the manual I have does not say which model it is only Potterton combi 80.
The watchdog scandal will not apply to this model and to be honest I will just get the board asap as it is cold.
Thanks for searching the net for me.
There is a company selling refurbished boards with a one year guarantee, they seem well established so going to give them a try.

    Thx

    Just an update.

All ok bought new board locally.
    New £105 inc vat.
Just fitted it and all working.
    Lovely and warm again.
Could not get a refurb until after New year and I am to soft to wait.
Even though it would have been a big saving and the same 1 year warranty.

Many thx for all whom contributed.
