British Gas smart meter in house display no longer working & B Gas not doing anything about it

As per title - I have a holiday cottage & like to see how much energy is being used when guests are in whether winter summer electric cars etc etc so I can monitor my prices. I also want to use it for the house - in this age of high energy prices. It stopped working & when I ocntacted them today they say as its over 12months old they dont replace it! I have to log into my account to see my useage! They have said it their policy & i have asked to open a complaint - tho as its a complaint bout their policy it will be opened & closed & only used as feedback!! How ridiulous - I plan to take his further - why on earth cant they send a new display unit out. My mum keeps getting pestered to have  smart meter  -they keep saying she can track her useage - well this is a lie - as if that display box breaks down - they dont give you a new one! so thats trying to fit smart meters under false pretences - anyone else had this issue? many thanks

They only have to maintain the IHD for 12 months.  There are many options open to you with apps and third party devices, in all honesty it would have been a better option not to have the instant bits of WEEE provided with smart meter installation and pointed to on line / app options only.  No real point complaining as they are doing nothing wrong within the scope of the regulations.
  • No point in taking it further they have no obligation to replace it. You can however monitor the usage using one one of the smart meter apps such as Loop or Bright, which I would have thought a better option for you as you as you can do it remotely.

So you have holiday cottage and you want to see the usage via the toy in said cottage, which means you going to read said toy. Why not read the meters when you are moaning about the IHD not working. Get real or put in prepayment meters in, sorry for being harsh but hey it’s the season of goodwill so take it up with BG, or santa.

Edited Sorry but IHDs are no use whatsover really.

As above, even a working IHD isn't going to do much for you. Get the Bright app, or register with n3rgy.com and you can download your usage data for the last 3 months.

Molerat as you obviously know the guidance can I ask you this. The electricity companies keep trying to get my near 80 year old mum to have a smart meter - so if she agreed & the same happens with her & the device thing in her house stops working she will be told to look at her useage online or to try to see it via an app on her phone. But she doesnt have a smart phone & doesnt use the internet - hwo do the guidelines account for the many elderly people like her who dont want to & or cant use the intenet or apps. In these situations what advantage is there then to them in having the smart meter - sorry im not ignorant but have no time to read up on the regs (a job & too many aninmals to look after! but as you seem fully conversant with them thought Id pick your brains! thanks

The advantage is that she won't have to either send off meter readings or have estimated bills. What would she want the IHD for anyway?

As others have said, a provider has no responsibility for an IHD after 12 months.

Options include using an app or taking readings directly from the smart reader itself.

If you really want a new physical IHD, you can buy your own from https://shop.glowmarkt.com/products/display-and-cad-combined-for-smart-meter-customers

She can continue to read the actual meter for the readings in the same way she does now. She doesn't need to use the gadget at all if she doesn't want to.
