Energy headlines and trends for 2024 - what are your predictions?

OK everyone time to polish up your crystal balls, get out the tarot cards and see a clairvoyant....

What do you think the big energy headlines and trends be for 2024?

Will we have another major price shock? Will standing charges be reduced? Will smart meters be made compulsory? Any notable trends we should be following? What else will happen that will be newsworthy?

Let's make this a friendly predictions thread about what you think will happen, which may not be the same as what you think should happen. There are plenty of other threads debating the pros and cons of different policy options :-)

Over to you - who's going first?

Several firms have stopped using the Suez Canal following attacks.
The Suez Canal to the north of the Red Sea, makes the route one of the world's most important routes for consumer goods, oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

Will the above continue and affect oil and other prices?

  • Second guesser here, inflation is falling but prices never go down in the longer term, except tech perhaps more rants to follow no doubt . Never mind Rodney this time next year we will be millionaires and the £ will be worth 1 cent, and the temperature will be 40°C and we can corner the market on ASCPs.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict there will be seven - no eight - 'abolish standing charges' threads, resulting in at least three bans and zero enlightenment.
  • The Panama canal is also having issues, due to drought. But this potentially could reduce UK energy prices in the short term, because it means LNG shipments are coming to Europe rather than through the canal.

Two or three with every change on the price cap? Seems reasonable.

People will still not understand that the energy price cap figure isn't an all-you-can-eat offer.

People will still post nonsense about smart meters.
