Be careful to double check that whatever dash cam you're looking at will not cause a problem with any 'smart' tech on your car. I have a Subaru and the on-board system for anti-collision, smart cruise control and lane detection requires nearly all of the windscreen to be kept clear of objects, so nothing attached to the windscreen apart from in the bottom corners of the screen.

OP, if you are interested still, I use my phone as a front facing dash cam. Cost me £0, and use a free app on android called Droid Dashcam. Obviously there is a small risk I miss something not having a rear facing cam, but not been an issue in over 30 years of driving without a camera. I only tried it as I was thinking about getting a proper cam fitted and wasn't sure if I'd take to it. Picture quality is okay, can pick up number plates day and night near to the car. Obviously doesn't work if you aren't in the car. More of a cheapskate solution, but does for me..

I picked up one of these for £5 on Facebook. Easy to use and works well.
