I have an android phone and rotate the screen accordingly when neccessary. A relative has an iPhone. When we do a video call with her, she seems unable to achieve autorotate. She either says "it won't let me do it" or "my phones an iPhone", suggesting its not something iphones do.
I've googled and know full well you can. But to be sure, do all iphone models have an autorotate facility?.

Ask them to swipe down from the top of the screen where they usually see things like volume and brightness. If the symbol I’ve highlighted below is white (as per my picture) they have screen orientation lock on - they need to tap it so it goes grey to turn it off. That will then allow the auto rotate function to work:

If you can use YouTube there will be many teaching videos to watch to get familiar
Which iPhone is it ? "6" "8" *12 * "mini" "plus"
You can find that out in the settings menu
Settings>general>about0
