Iphone - half of screen doesn't repsond

We have an old iphone xs max which we were going to gift to someone in need, but we have found it has an issue.

The right hand side of the screen does not respond to touch. We've cleaned the screen and done a factory reset but no joy.

I figure it must be something hardware and wondered if anyone has ever had this issue and what the solution was - if any?
